Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed participating in different card games when he was young. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and lose most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
