Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing range of betting choices and seeing that you have many players trying for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
