Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi lo starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing range of wagering possibilities and because you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi-low.
